Cy Monkman started his own insurance business on November 1st, 1958. The firm was originally known as Cyril Monkman Insurance. In 1976 it was incorporated as Monkman Insurance Agencies Limited later changing to Monkman Insurance Brokers Limited, in keeping with the insurance services provided. The business moved to its present location, 243 Hunter Street, in May 1984.

Cy Monkman is a graduate of P.C.V.S. In 1975 he was awarded both the Chartered Life Underwriter (C.L.U.) degree by the Life Underwriter's Association of Canada and the (C.C.I.B.) degree by what is now the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada.

Eric Monkman joined his father in business in 1979 after graduating from Queen's University School of Business and Economics. He immediately enrolled as a student with the Insurance Institute of Canada and soon graduated with an Associate (A.I.I.C.) degree. Not satisfied with that accomplishment he continued with post graduate studies. In 1984 he was awarded his Fellowship (F.I.I.C.). In the same year he sat for the Chartered Insurance Broker examinations, and was awarded the C.C.I.B. degree. Both these degrees represent the ultimate achievement in their respective affiliation. Eric has remained active in various insurance associations being Past Chairman of the Kawartha Chapter of the Insurance Institute of Ontario and Past President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Peterborough. He is a Past President of the Big Brothers & Sisters Association of Peterborough, a Past Board member of the Family YMCA and presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce.

Lorraine Smith, a Registered Insurance Broker and Customer Service Supervisor joined the firm early on. Since that time she has gained a very extensive insurance product knowledge which reflects in the outstanding service given to the brokerage clients. She is an Associate of the Insurance Institute of Canada, (A.I.I.C.), a degree awarded after having completed an extensive study course.

David Smith joined the brokerage in July of 2001. He has worked in the general insurance business as a sales representative/producer since 1989 specializing in Commercial and Business insurance as well as personal automobile and residential coverages. David holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from Trent University and has attained his Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (C.A.I.B.) designation in addition to being a Ontario Registered Insurance Broker.

The insurance activities of Monkman Insurance Brokers Limited are not restricted to Peterborough and area. The brokerage writes personal and commercial insurance across Central Ontario and has participated in insurance requirements for large construction projects across Canada. These include the CN Tower, the Montreal Olympic complex, numerous hydro and nuclear power stations including James Bay LGI and the Royal Bank Plaza in Toronto.
